JOHANNESBURG - Police investigations continue into a shootout in Randfontein, West of Johannesburg, where a policeman and two members of the community policing forum were wounded.

Police were following a lead on Saturday, when the shootout happened.

Officers stopped two men driving around the area and arrested them for the illegal possession of firearms.

The men had a 9mm unlicensed firearm and material related to rightwing propaganda in their possession, said police spokesperson Katlego Mogale.

After arrests, officers instructed the men to lead them to their house to search for more guns.

Upon their arrival, a 59-year-old man believed to be the owner of the house opened fire on officers.

Police said the house owner committed suicide before he could be arrested.

The apprehended suspects will appear in the Randfontein Magsitrate’s Court on Monday, said Mogale.
