'Public holiday system needs review'
The Cape Chamber of Commerce says the public holiday system needs to be relooked.
CAPE TOWN - South Africa's public holiday system needs to be relooked, the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Tuesday.
The organisation believes as things stand, the system is just not working.
Public hearings are currently underway after complaints from other religious groups, that the current Public Holiday Act of 1994, is biased.
The hearings move to Cape Town next week, while Durbanites will have their say on the matter on Thursday.
But the chamber's Gordon Metter said there is a solution.
"If a public holiday falls on a Sunday that is the public holiday and shouldn't be carried over to a Monday."
Metter says there is also another option.
"For example, if a public holiday falls on a Thursday, it should be moved to either Friday or Monday to give a long weekend and not interrupt a working week."
