6.5 percent wage hike proposed for municipal workers
SAMWU wants an 11.5 percent wage increase for workers.
CAPE TOWN - A mediator has proposed a 6.5 percent wage hike for municipal workers.
Thursday signalled the end of the final round of wage talks between union South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and the SA Local Government Association (SALGA).
Workers want an 11.5 percent increase, while SALGA has been offering 4.5 percent.
SAMWU's Dale Forbes said they are not happy with the latest proposal.
"The key elements of those proposals are that a wage increase of 6.5 percent is then granted for this year. On the other hand, SALGA will withdraw its threat to cancel all existing agreements that cover the sector."
