Cause of Isidingo set fire undetermined
The cause of a fire that broke out at the SABC studio in Auckland Park is currently unknown.
JOHANNESBURG - It was unclear on Thursday morning what caused a fire that destroyed the entire set of popular television soap opera Isidingo.
The blaze at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) studio in Auckland Park broke out at around 8pm on Wednesday night.
Investigators were expected to comb the scene of the fire on Thursday to determine what caused the blaze that ripped through Studio 6.
At this stage the national broadcaster is reluctant to estimate the value of the damage, but it was estimated the cost could run up to R100 million.
The SABC's Kaizer Kganyango said the incident would probably affect production.
"The production will obviously be affected but viewers of Isidingo need not be alarmed because they have recordings of between six to eight weeks which confirm that the soapie is on air."
By 6am on Thursday morning, fire trucks were still on the scene.
Staff who had not heard the news on Thursday night were shocked to see what had happened.
"It's a massive, massive shock," said the creator Grey Hofmeyer of Isidingo.
"I got a call in the middle of the night and told that the production is burning.
"It has huge implication."
