CAPE TOWN - Around 150 residents are currently protesting in Ashton near Montague in the Western Cape.

The disgruntled protesters on Wednesday torched a municipal building.

Nobody has been arrested at this stage.

The Langeberg Municipality's Sanelle Posthumus said, "There's an illegal protest in Ashton. Police are monitoring the situation and there's no reason for concern at this stage."

Meanwhile, the Western Cape has recorded the highest number of service delivery protests in 2012.

Provincial Local Government MEC Anton Bredell believes the protests are politically motivated.

He believes the demonstrations are aimed at destabilising the DA-led province.
