JOHANNESBURG - Provincial government has made steady progress in stabilising the troubled health department, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said on Tuesday.

Speaking during her 2012/2013 budget vote in the Gauteng Legislature, she said a turnaround strategy has been developed.

This will see further improvements in the department going forward.

"We will be presenting our turnaround strategy to the Minister of Finance [Pravin Gordhan], as agreed upon with the national government."

The proposal will also include Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

The Gauteng Health Department's financial woes resulted in service providers not being paid on time.

But Mokonyane said officials have made substantial headway.
