Cele attends Mpisane trial
Bheki Cele has been slammed for attending the trial of fraud accused Shauwn Mpisane on Monday.
JOHANNESBURG - Suspended National Commissioner of Police Bheki Cele has been slammed for attending the trial of wealthy Durban businesswoman and fraud-accused Shauwn Mpisane on Monday.
Mpisane, whom Cele refers to as his "foster daughter", is accused of committing tax fraud amounting to about R5 million.
But Cele's spokesperson Vuyo Mkhize said no one could dictate who the police chief may have a relationship with.
He said Cele believes all accused are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Mpisane is currently on trial in the Durban Magistrates Court.
The controversial businesswoman owns Zikhulise Cleaning Maintenance and Transport CC, and Ukhozi Civil Cleaning and Construction.
The state is accusing her of submitting false invoices so she could claim back VAT.
Mpisane and her former police constable husband, S'bu, are known for their expensive taste and lavish lifestyles.
S'bu, who is no stranger to controversy, was investigated three years ago for driving a Lamborghini sports car on a monthly salary of R15,000.
He tendered his resignation as a police officer and joined his wife's companies.
The Mpisane-owned companies made millions of Rands in profit with contracts which was awarded to them by the Durban metro municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal government.
