CAPE TOWN - ANC Treasury General Mathews Phosa on Saturday urged the party in the Western Cape to channel its efforts towards regaining control of the province from the Democratic Alliance (DA).

He delivered a key note address at the provincial general council in Salt River.

Delegates from across the province attended the two day event to discuss the ANC's policy recommendation ahead of the National Policy Council later in June.

Phosa said gaining control of the Western Cape must be prioritised.

"We should try and win the Western Cape back. I speak here not as a refugee but as a South African citizen. We must take it back, comrades," he said.

Phosa urged members not give up in their fight.

"We must deal with the issues affecting the people in the ground. We must fight and mobilise the people."

Meanwhile, the DA has made it clear that it is eyeing taking over Gauteng in the next general elections.

DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said her party planned to govern Gauteng either by winning outright or in a coalition.
