JOHANNESBURG - Two people have burnt to death in a house fire that took place on Tay Street in Northmead, Benoni.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

ER24'S Vanessa Jackson says, "When paramedics arrived there were fire and rescue services trying to extinguish the fire. But sadly, two people suffered critical injuries and they had died inside the house."

There have also been unconfirmed reports that a third person was in the house at the time of the fire.

At the same time, 26 people have been left homeless in Alexandra after their shacks burnt down overnight.

Emergency services say the fire was started by a stove that was left unattended in a shack.

No injuries have been reported.

Meanwhile, the George Municipality says the cause of a shack fire in which two Thembalethu children were killed, is still unclear.

A four-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl died in the incident.

The municipality's Steven Erasmus says, "Police are investigating the cause of the fire."

Authorities have warned people not to leave fires unattended as the entire country experiences its coldest weekend this year.
