ANC slams Youth Wage Subsidy debate
The ANC on Friday said the Youth Wage Subsidy debate was nothing more than union bashing.
CAPE TOWN - The ANC on Friday said the Youth Wage Subsidy debate in the Western Cape Legislature is nothing more than union bashing.
The province plans to ask National Treasury for its portion of the R5 billion initiative.
The Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) has not supported the subsidy scheme, claiming employers will manipulate the system to use youth as cheap labour.
On Thursday, the Youth Wage Subsidy was debated in the provincial legislature.
The ANC's Lynne Brown said there have always been youth employment initiatives.
"On my watch, it was a pro-poor youth skills and work experience programme. The ANC did not have to pay anyone to take young people in."
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said Cosatu is to blame for stifling economic growth.
