JOHANNESBURG - Rights organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse on Thursday called for a maximum sentence for the two men accused of murdering a five-month-old baby and her caregiver in Delmas, Mpumalanga.

Enock Mbele and Lazarus Mabhena were accused of strangling baby Wiehan Botes and his caregiver at a daycare centre in May.

The Democratic Alliance's Mmusi Maimane led a protest outside the court on Thursday demanding that government ensure safety in rural communities.

The pair appeared in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Thursday, and the case was postponed to next week Thursday.

The organisations Vincentia Dlamini Ngobese commended the Delmas community for protesting against the violence.

"Without public awareness, people are not going to be aware of how serious these crimes are, and the number of crimes committed against our children."
