Taxpayers to fund elections?
The ANC proposes that the public should pay for elections.
PRETORIA - The ANC said a recommendation for the establishment of a Parliamentary committee on election funding will be taken to its policy conference later in 2012.
Speaking in Pretoria on Friday, ANC Treasurer General Mathews Phosa announced that the party wants taxpayers to fund political parties and elections.
The ruling party is holding a two-day finance workshop which is being attended by more than 50 regional treasurers.
Phosa said three items led discussions at the conference.
"We need to have public funding for elections, we need to regulate private funding and we need to have limits agreed upon."
Phosa said the party wants a new approach to funding elections.
"We think the taxpayer must contribute towards those elections because it is about democracy."
He said corruption and misuse of public funds was also discussed.
