West Rand needs more fire hydrants
A fire raged out of control over the weekend on the West Rand because fire hydrants are scarce in the area.
JOHANNESBURG - The West Rand Municipality on Tuesday said it was in the process of installing more fire hydrants in the Randfontein area, where three children died in a house fire over the weekend.
It was reported firefighters were not able to extinguish the blaze because the fire engine ran out of water.
Officials said they did everything they could to put out the flames but had to leave the scene to get more water from a hydrant which was situated some distance away.
The municipality's Public Safety Manager Elias Koloi said this situation was unfortunately unavoidable.
"To my assessment, everything was done to the best of their abilities," said Koloi.
"At the time they struggled to find fire hydrants because there are none in that area.
"I am sitting here with a request for quotations from the local municipality in their effort to improve their fire hydrants in the area."
