We must support Meyer - de Villiers
Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers on Tuesday said he fully supported new coach Heyneke Meyer.
CAPE TOWN - Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers on Tuesday said he fully supported all the decisions made by new coach Heyneke Meyer.
Meyer on Monday announced Stormers skipper Jean de Villers as the new Springbok captain.
But there was also public outcry over notable omissions from the squad which included several regulars such as Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh.
Many rugby supporters on Saturday took to social networks to voice their grievances.
Garth Theunissen tweeted, "Siya Kolisi should have made the Bok squad."
Ryan Coetzee wrote, "I don't tweet anymore, but I am making an exception for Siya Kolisi. We need a march, or a boycott, or a threat of a second transition!"
Stuart Hess wrote, "JJ Engelbrecht and no Gio Aplon...you're having a laugh Heyneke."
However, de Villiers urged South Africa to back the coach.
"I think Jean is the obvious choice. He's got a lot of experience. We need to support the coach because he is doing it for the country."
The vice captain will be announced on Wednesday.
The England test kicks off on Saturday in Durban.
