More needs to be done for children
Child Protection Week highlights social issues but more needs to be done throughout the year.
CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town non-profit organisation for abused women and children on Monday said more needed to be done to highlight the plight of victims.
The Saatjie Baartman Centre in Mannenberg said even though Child Protection Week highlighted the issues, not enough was being done during the year.
The centre's director Synnov Skorge said Child Protection Week played a pivotal role in raising awareness.
"This should be a starting point to implement a plan to do much more for children of the Western Cape," said Skorge.
The Western Cape Department of Social Development announced the extension of Child Protection Week to a month on Monday.
"Protecting our children should not be limited to themes and time frames set by government," Social Development MEC Albert Fritz said.
"As parents, community leaders, NGOs and faith-based organisations, we should always have the safety of children at heart."
Fritz said it was important that parents understood various options involved in protecting and safeguarding their children, particularly disabled children.
