Rabies case in Dainfern
Gauteng veterinary services have confirmed a case of rabies in Dainfern.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng veterinary services on Monday confirmed a case of rabies in Dainfern, Johannesburg.
A puppy, believed to have been brought from the Eastern Cape, was diagnosed with the virus and put down on Monday night.
Head of the provinces veterinary services, Dr Alan Kalate said, "One of our vets will visit the owners of the puppy to found out if there were other dogs in the yard. They will also try and establish whether the puppy had contact with other dogs in the neighbourhood so we can start vaccinating."
Kalate also reminded dog and cat owners to vaccinate their pets against the highly infectious disease.
In May, an eight-year-old boy from KwaZulu-Natal died after he was bitten by a dog.
Meanwhile, a three-year-old Durban boy was hospitalised after contracting the deadly rabies virus.
