CAPE TOWN - A non-governmental organisation on Saturday said it is concerned with the growing demand to feed underprivileged communities.

About 20 staff members and volunteers from the Mustadafin Foundation in Cape Town prepared food at the Bridgetown Welfare Service Centre in Athlone, to be distributed to disadvantaged areas on Saturday afternoon.

Volunteers plan to feed some 5000 people from Nyanga, Delft and Hanover Park.

The foundation, which says it receives most of its contributions from donators, feeds about 15, 000 people daily.

However, the demand for food grows in winter, when people from across the Western Cape province contact the organisation for assistance.

The organisation's disaster coordinator, Ibrahim Smith, said they hope to keep up with the growing demand for food, as they often have limited supplies.
