We weren't censored - gallery
The Goodman Gallery dismissed claims of being gagged by the ANC over 'The Spear'.
JOHANNESBURG - The Goodman Gallery on Wednesday said it was not censored by the ANC.
During a press conference on Wednesday morning, the gallery announced that it will remove artist Brett Murray's painting showing President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed.
The controversial portrait titled 'The Spear' resulted in widespread debate around South Africa.
The gallery said it will remove the picture from its website as a gesture.
Goodman Gallery director Liza Essers said everybody has a very different view of the piece.
ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu announced that the ruling party will withdraw its case from court.
He said the ANC was confident that the debate around the painting could not be handled by any constitutional instruments, including the courts.
