State opposes bail for Mbizane accused
The Pretoria Central Prison hears a case of murder against Zwelibanzi Zungu
PRETORIA - State prosecutors intend on disputing police brutality claims made by a missing Centurion woman's ex-boyfriend.
Zwelibanzi Zungu (30) has been charged with the murder of his former girlfriend Nandi Mbizane (27).
He applied for bail in the Pretoria Central Prison on Wednesday.
Zungu lodged a complaint of alleged police brutality with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate on May 12.
He told the court he was beaten by police on several occasions.
The suspect also claims that officers assaulted his mother, bugged his phone, and harassed his family and friends.
In court, prosecutors called investigating officer Ignatius Kruger to the stand.
He said Zungu was never assaulted.
The state believes he could intimidate other witnesses if he is released on bail.
Kruger told the court that Zungu was the last person seen with Mbizane at her Centurion home on March 4.
According to the accused, he last saw his ex-girlfriend two days before she disappeared.
But the investigator said Zungu's DNA was found at Mbizane's home where blood was spattered on the wall and bed sheets.
