ANC wants probe into alleged councillor fight
The ANC is calling for an investigation into claimes levelled against Lungiswa James.
CAPE TOWN - The ANC in the City of Cape Town is calling for an investigation into claims levelled against Mayoral Committee Member for Health, Lungiswa James.
West Cape News reported that James allegedly threw punches and hurled abusive language at Democratic Alliance (DA) members following a housing meeting in Gugulethu over the weekend.
It is believed she also assaulted DA Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP), Archie Figlan.
James' spokesperson Sandile Bontsa denied the incident and said the article was fabricated.
"Councillor James was there in the capacity as a resident. The article itself, the content is based on sheer lies. There were no blows or abuse intended to anyone."
The ANC's Xolani Sotashe said he heard James accuse a DA member of backstabbing her before they came to blows.
"We are going to ask the person that was assaulted to give an affidavit. As soon as we get it, we will write to the office of the speaker to investigate the matter."
Figlan also said the article was completely untrue.
"This is fabricated. At the same time, I never spoke to any journalist, so I don't know where they come up with this."
West Cape News Editor Steve Kretzmann said they are sticking by their article.
"I sat down with my reporter who has never fabricated a story yet…I have no reason to doubt his version of events. He was at the scene."
