JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Taxi Association (Santaco) on Tuesday welcomed an initiative to equip drivers with life saving first aid skills.

The association said its members want to contribute towards safer roads.

The training is the result of a partnership between the Transport Ministry, Santaco and Netcare 911.

Santaco spokesperson Thabiso Molelekwa said the taxi industry is ready to help reduce fatalities.

He said the association approached Minister S'bu Ndebele to come up with a policy to have first aid kits fitted in taxis.
