JOHANNESBURG - About 17 shacks in Denver were completely destroyed in the early hours of Saturday morning, the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services said.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the widespread fire in the south of Johannesburg informal settlement.
No injuries were reported, but the fire left dozens of people homeless.
The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Robert Mulaudzi, said relieve efforts were in progress.
He said non-governmental organisations were assisting the 29 affected lives to move forward from the disaster.
The community was also given fire safety training, said Mulaudzi.
Last week, more that 12 shacks burnt down in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
