CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government on Thursday said it wanted to strengthen its relationship with other African countries.

Several exhibitions are running at the Artscape Complex ahead of Africa Day celebrations on Friday.

The annual event commemorates the day when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was established back in 1963.

Leaders of 30 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Western Cape Cultural Affairs MEC Ivan Meyer said, "African economies are growing and we are now seeing that the wealth of Africa is reaching the poor. We are celebrating Africa Day because we are proud of our achievements as a nation."
