Illegal miner rescued
An illegal miner has been rescued after he was trapped underground at Kleinzee in the Northern Cape.
CAPE TOWN - One of the 19 illegal miners trapped underground at Kleinzee in the Northern Cape has been rescued, police confirmed on Tuesday.
According to officials, the man is in a stable condition and will be treated for shock and other minor injuries.
On Tuesday morning, a tunnel in the mine collapsed trapping the men.
The police's Cherelle Ehlers said, "The sand is very loose and that hinders with the rescue operation."
In March, 20 illegal miners were trapped at the Gravelotte gold mine on Gauteng's East Rand.
The men were mining illegally when a rock fell and trapped them underground.
The search for the miners was called off as the process was deemed dangerous.
In a separate incident, three illegal miners were involved in an underground shooting in Eastvale.
Two men died and another was injured in the shooting.
It is believed the victims were shot at by other illegal miners attempting to rob them of their gold.
