CANNES - South Africa's film industry will receive a boost at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend.

Over 100 local filmmakers are at the prestigious film festival and movie market, to promote their latest projects.

Rain may have started falling down, but that has not dampened the atmosphere ahead of the weekend's activities.

South Africa will showcase 20 film projects, looking for funding or distribution deals.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile will sign a co-production treaty with Ireland, it will be the eighth such treaty signed, helping to make it easier to get local films financed and made.

In 2011, South Africa showcased 24 films and documentaries at the prestigious event.

Afrikaans film, Skoonheid, was honoured by the Cannes jury.

The festival kicked off on 16 May and will end on 27 May.
