JOHANNESBURG - Midrand police are investigating a shack fire in Ivory Park, which burnt a woman to death on Saturday morning.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services said the woman, who was in her early 30s, was declared dead on the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was caused by an electric fault.

Emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged the public to be extra cautious when using electric appliances this winter.

He said people should never leave their heaters unattended, because that was what caused many of the fires.

He said the problem is worse in informal settlements because people use candles and paraffin stoves in their homes, then forget about them.
