CAPE TOWN - The Defence Ministry on Thursday said land owned by the department was being audited.

Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu told a media briefing in Parliament that she planned to use some of it to provide proper accommodation for soldiers.

She said the department wanted to enter into a partnership with the private sector.

Sisulu said the land was previously held in trust by the Department of Public Works, but has now been returned to the Defence Ministry.

Sisulu also announced that soldiers will receive salary increases based on years of service and qualify for a housing.

Sisulu said she wanted to restore the dignity of soldiers.

"We are going to call upon all of those people who were in the Defence Force to be part of the Reserves because we want to raise the profile of people who have done such significant work and continue to do such significant work."
