CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town man jailed in Afghanistan for murder was on Wednesday on his way home.

His brother Patrick told Eyewitness News that Phillip was released from prison on Tuesday, after his sentence was shortened.

Patrick last saw his brother two years ago.

"We look forward to seeing him in Cape Town. I am very excited."

Young launched an appeal against his sentence to the Afghan judiciary.

He was very pessimistic in a letter he wrote to his family, which was posted onto Facebook.

In the letter, he wrote his religion and cultural differences were counting against him.

He also claimed corruption in the Afghan judicial system was making things difficult for him.
