PRETORIA - Lieutenant General Themba Matanzima was sworn in as South Africa's first military ombudsman at a ceremony in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.

In March, Parliament passed the Military Ombudsman Bill in order to allow for the establishment of the office.

Matanzima will investigate complaints against the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

He will also investigate conditions of service.

Monday's ceremony was conducted by Judge Francis Legodi.

Matanzima will serve a seven-year term as ombudsman.

The Ministry of Defence set up the office following a recommendation from Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

She played a significant role in crafting the legislation.
