Report into overfishing expected
Fisheries Dept. expects a report into the overfishing of crayfish.
CAPE TOWN - The Department of Fisheries on Wednesday said it expects to get the report of an investigation into overfishing of crayfish in some areas in two weeks time.
Government recently closed the rock lobster season, citing over-fishing.
A group of fishermen from the Western and Northern Cape protested outside the department's offices in Cape Town on Monday, calling for the suspension to be lifted.
They argue the government's research to support the move does not add up.
The Department of Fisheries' Lionel Adendorff said they received several concerning reports.
"There were various irregularities such as overfishing and under reporting. There were also allegations of corruption. We have been investigating the matter and the department will receive a report on it in the next two weeks."
