JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has appointed a new acting CEO.

In a shock announcement on Tuesday morning, the agency said Nazir Alli will step down in June.

Koos Smit will replace him.

He is currently Sanral's engineering executive.

Smit has been described as a "long-standing member of Sanral's management team."

The agency has been hit by a series of problems over its controversial Gauteng e-tolling project.

In late April, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an interdict against e-tolls, pending the outcome of a legal review.
