JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg on Wednesday said it will dramatically increase community engagement on the rollout of paid parking in various areas.

According to the municipality, it has followed all required procedures to implement the system.

But Parkhurst businesses have expressed their outrage after experiencing a drop in turnover of up to 50 percent.

City spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said, "A well organised parking system tends to encourage visitors to business nodes because of available parking spaces."

He said the municipality recognises unhappiness over the system and officials are willing to engage further.

Tugwana said councillors have been given all the relevant information relating to the scheme.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, local councillors said they have received no official communication from the city.
