CAPE TOWN - A small group of fishermen from the Western and Northern Cape protested outside the Department of Fisheries in Cape Town on Monday.

They called on government to reopen the rock lobster fishing season.

It is meant to end in June, but the department temporarily suspended the season because of overfishing in some coastal areas.

Chants of "we want our crayfish back" could be heard outside the department.

Some fishermen waved placards reading, "Lift the suspension now".

Community organisation Postal Links' Christen Adams said the department's research did not add up.

He said it was not fair for all fishermen to bear the brunt of the suspension.

The fishermen handed over a memorandum, calling for the suspension to be lifted.

Adams warned that they will take the matter to court if their demands are not met.
