ANCYL demands Malema's return
The ANCYL’s NEC called on the ruling party to revoke its decision to expel Julius Malema.
JOHANNESBURG - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL)'s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday called on the ruling party to revoke its decision to expel Julius Malema.
The NEC said the decision to remove Malema undermined the autonomy of the League.
The body also confirmed that Pule Mabe was removed from his post as the treasurer general.
Deputy Secretary General Kenetswe Mosenogi said Malema and other ANCYL leaders are being punished for their politics.
In April, the controversial ANCYL politician was expelled after he was found guilty of sowing divisions and bringing the party into disrepute.
ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu was suspended for three years, while Secretary General Sidiso Magaqa was kicked out the League for one year.
Mosenogi said the decision to remove Mabe was difficult.
"In the end, comrades expressed themselves to say the NEC had lost confidence in Mabe."
The Youth League said it would hold a national council meeting soon.
