JOHANNESBURG - The Sunday Times is reporting that the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi claimed Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille is power-hungry and is pre-occupied with recruiting him to her party.

Zille apparently approached Vavi in the run-up to the local elections.

The two have since bumped heads, with Vavi banning Zille from an e-toll protest march and Zille claiming Cosatu failed the unemployed by opposing the proposed Youth Wage Subsidy.

Vavi reportedly said he could never join a party which continues to exploit workers.

While Zille has denied that she attempted to recruit Vavi.

The DA leader's spokesperson, Pierre-Charl du Preez laughed off the claims on Sunday.

"Miss Zille has never tried to recruit Zwelinzima Vavi to the DA, doing so would be absurd… If people disagree on their approach to SA's greatest challenge [job creation], it is impossible to absorb them into the same political party. "
