Charges against rape accused provisionally withdrawn
Charges of rape and kidnapping were provisionally withdrawn against a gang-rape video suspect.
SOWETO - Charges of rape and kidnapping were provisionally withdrawn against an eighth suspect in the Soweto gang-rape video case.
In April, the graphic footage went viral on social networking sites.
The video shows seven people, including four minors, taking turns to rape a 17-year-old Soweto teenager.
The rape victim then went missing and was later found in the company of a 37-year-old man.
He appeared in court on Friday.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said charges could be reinstated once the investigation is complete.
"We don't even have a statement from the victim, so we are unable to keep the man in custody."
Mhaga said they want to allow police sufficient time to complete their probe.
On Thursday, four minors who were also arrested in connection with the video were released on bail.
The three adults will remain in police custody.
