Inmates celebrate special remission
Pretoria Central Prison inmates are celebrating following the announcement of special remissions.
PRETORIA - Inmates at the Pretoria Central Prison on Monday described scenes of jubilation upon hearing the news that President Jacob Zuma has granted special remissions.
On Friday, the president used Freedom Day celebrations at the Union Buildings to announce the remission.
Qualifying prisoners will have their sentences slashed by between six and 18 months.
A man serving a four-year sentence for theft will soon be going home following Zuma's announcement.
"Everybody was screaming and shouting. It was really awesome. Thank you Zuma."
Another inmate said Zuma's decision will result in better behaviour in prisons.
"It encourages us as inmates to change."
Correctional Services said it would start the ten-week release of thousands of inmates from the middle of May.
