Hostage drama unfolds at KZN hospital

A KwaZulu-Natal man was shot and killed during a hostage drama at a hospital.

A gunman held up staff at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal.

JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal police shot and killed a man who took one hostage at Life Westville Hospital in Durban on Friday.

The drama started earlier in the day when the man grew impatient with hospital staff who apparently failed to respond to his demands for immediate medical attention.

Police said he then pulled out a gun and started shooting randomly in the hospital reception.

Three people were slightly wounded by shrapnel, while the hostage was later shot directly.

The shooter then fled to the first floor where he took a kitchen staffer hostage.

The police's Jay Naicker said officers were forced to act.

"After four hours of negotiations, the hostage negotiations team was not very successful with the man," said Naicker.

"They tried various tactics."
