Heroes to be honoured on Freedom Day
South Africans will be honoured at the National Orders ceremony on Freedom Day.
PRETORIA - As part of Freedom Day celebrations, musicians, activists and heroes who saved lives are among South Africans who will be honoured at the National Orders Ceremony in Pretoria on Friday evening.
The orders are bestowed on people who have made contributions to the country and the world.
The Chancellor of the National Orders will award 31 people at the Union Buildings.
Neil Sharocks will receive the Silver Order of Mendi after helping to save 44 children who nearly drowned when their bus crashed into a river in Knysna last year.
Musician Johnny Clegg and former rugby player and activist Cheeky Watson will receive the Silver Order of Ikhamanga.
Former ANC presidents Albert Luthuli and Oliver Tambo will post-humously be awarded the Platinum Order of Mapungubwe.
