Four people have been killed in a taxi accident just after the De Hoek Toll Plaza on the N3 towards Durban.
JOHANNESBURG - Four people have been killed in a taxi accident just after the De Hoek Toll Plaza on the N3 towards Durban.
Netcare 911's Jeff Wicks said paramedics were busy transporting four others who were critically injured.
"Paramedics stopped at the scene and initiated care. They have also called for the assistance of the Netcare 911 helicopter."
The N3 toll concession's Con Roux said traffic on the route has been severely affected.
"Both the fast and slow lanes have been obstructed. Traffic is moving past using the emergency lane, but there is a sever backlog that has developed."
Meanwhile, five people were killed and two pedestrians injured in a car accident in Naturena in the south of Johannesburg on Thursday night.
The white BMW veered off the road, crashed into a lamp pole, a tree and then a wall of a house.
All five occupants including the driver of the car died on impact.
Two pedestrians who were rushed to the hospital.
The JMPD's Wayne Minaar said, "The impact of the accident was so great that the car split into two. There was also a very strong smell of alcohol which came from the damaged car."
In another accident, a man was killed when a bakkie collided with a taxi in Pretoria.
Traffic authorities are urging motorists to abide by the law over the long weekend.
Emergency service's Synock Mataboko urged motorists to exercise caution.
"We just want to appeal to motorists that these are the times when people are supposed to be happy at home with their families. It is not the time where people should be losing their lives."
