JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday welcomed the decision to deny bail to Soweto student constable accused of murdering a teenager.

On Wednesday, Sipho Mbatha appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on murder charges.

He is accused of killing 15-year-old Thato Mokoka with an R5 rifle following a botched raid in Braamfischerville earlier in 2011.

Magistrate Deliza Smith said Mbatha frequently absconded from work with no explanation.

She said this made the constable unreliable.

Smith said it was in the interest of justice for Mbatha to remain behind bars, due to the public outrage surrounding the case.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said, "We will push police to speed up their investigations because it is undesirable for someone to be in custody for a long time."
