Public Protector speaks on investigations into police

JOHANNESBURG - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Thursday public confidence and trust was greatly affected by the mounting allegations against police authorities.

She confirmed she was currently conducting an investigation into acting police chief Nhlanhla Mkwanazi regarding allegations of abuse of power and improper conduct.

However, she was not investigating acting Crime Intelligence Head Richard Mdluli because the inspector general of intelligence was busy probing multiple claims against him.

Madonsela said she was looking at the possibility of amalgamating all the complaints into one investigation.

"A lot of the investigations have to do with the use of the funds that have been allocated to crime intelligence."
