Two people have been charged with murder after a man died at the Durbanville police holding cells.

Eben Meyer was allegedly beaten to death in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was arrested, along with other suspects, for being drunk in public.

The police's Andre Traut said Meyer was involved in a fight behind bars.

"An argument broke out between the deceased and two prisoners and he was assaulted. He died as a result of his injuries. Two men are now facing murder charges."

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently investigating the death of an inmate at Lansdowne police station.

The man was allegedly shot dead by police during a jail break.

The newly revamped directorate has promised to speed up investigations.
