Eyewitness News report

The Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday announced it was looking to reach new audiences.

The event showcases international films and kicked off on Wednesday night.

Since the first event in 2001 the festival expanded to Qatar and there have been whispers of it heading to Cape Town in 2013.

Executive Director Nancy Schafer told Eyewitness News it was not yet confirmed.

"We're just in consultations," said Schafer.

"A lot of people ask us if we want to get involved and there's nothing else to report on that at this time."

The festival runs until 29 April.
