President Jacob Zuma arrived in India on Wednesday to lead a delegation to the fourth Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit.
The gathering brings together leaders of the major emerging economies of the five countries involved.
This week's summit will focus on global governance as well as sustainable development issues including climate change.
The president was accompanied by a high-profile team including the ministers of International Relations, Trade and Industry, Finance, Communications and Economic Development, as well as a local business delegation.
The government said on Tuesday that President Jacob Zuma intended to position South Africa as a global force representing emerging African economies in international platforms.
