Chanelle Henning's mother on Thursday said she was desperate to get custody of her four-year-old grandson.

Henning was shot and killed near her son's school in Faerie Glen in eastern Pretoria earlier this week by men on a motorbike.

She had been involved in a custody battle with her estranged husband and had recently been awarded full custody of the child.

Her mother Shanon Saincic said since the murder her grandson has been in foster care.

"Chanelle was granted custody after he had spent eight months in foster care due to the fact that his father had kidnapped him in April and the protection services decided to do this to protect Chanelle and her son," she said.

Saincic said it had been a struggle to see her grandson.

"The little boy has been through so much trauma in his life and we as the grandparents have done our utmost to protect my daughter and her son. We haven't seen our grandson since the shooting on Tuesday morning."

No one has been arrested yet in connection with the murder.
