The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said it appears that police are getting much better at preventing spikes in crime over the festive season.

On Tuesday alone there were two shootings in Johannesburg.

The institute's Gareth Newham said violent crime always rises towards the end of the year, but authorities are doing what they can to counter the problem.

"Some of these big shootouts and quick response by the police is testimony that they are getting better at fighting crime. So they [police] are able to actually engage with criminals more quickly when they commit these kinds of crimes," he said.
