The Department of Agriculture said criticism of Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson's luxury hotel accommodation is nothing more than cheap politicking.

The minister spent almost R1.6 million on hotel accommodation since April 2009 while "on official duties."

The ministry has tried to explain Joemat-Pettersson's pricey hotel stays adding that she did not have official accommodation for more than a year after her appointment in 2009.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday reacted angrily to her reply to a parliamentary question about the accommodation, saying the bills were unjustifiable in a country where millions live in poverty and do not have access to proper housing.

However, the ministry said it is disturbed by what it calls the opposition's grandstanding.

The department added that the DA's comments are insulting and disingenuous.
