The Department of Transport said while planned tolling projects in South Africa are on hold, current construction in Gauteng will continue.

This means tolling on the province's major routes is still scheduled to start early in 2012.

The department's Tiyani Rikhotso has clarified that work will continue on roads already being upgraded and the tolls issue will be discussed again in November.

"There is a discussion that is supposed to happen between the authorities in Gauteng and other consenting parties with regards to how does government repay the debt. Let us allow for those processes to unfold before making any conclusions," he added.
