A Midrand man was fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot multiple times during a house robbery in Halfway Gardens on Tuesday night.

Sources who were on the scene of the robbery told Eyewitness News of how the man's wife and children had hid in the bushes outside their home as he was shot.

It was understood paramedics arrived on the scene as the robbers were still in the house and one shot was fired as they tried to approach the house.

The homeowner was critically wounded and airlifted to the Netcare Milpark hospital in Johannesburg.

Police were yet to confirm the details of the incident.

But it was believed that the robbers escaped on foot when authorities arrived on the scene.
